PLACING A COMPONENT

A “component” can refer to different categories of elements. Typically, they would be categories that don’t have their own icon in the architecture tab. That might include: furniture, casework, entourage, specialty equipment, etc.

Use the component tool to place an instance of a family in your project. In the type selector, you could have a large list of families and types. Don’t hesitate to search for what you are looking for. In this example, we place a table.

MODIFY COMPONENT TYPE PROPERTIES

Similarly to elements such as walls and windows, each component has different type and instance properties. In the case of a table, you can modify the diameter and materials in the type properties. However, each category and family can have different parameters that can be customized by users in the family editor. See page 305 to learn more about families.

LOAD AUTODESK DEFAULT FAMILIES

In the long run, you should build your own custom library of families. However, this can be a daunting task for beginners. To get started, you can use Autodesk default families. While they are not perfect, they are usually much better than families you can find on manufacturers website. Go to to Insert Tool and click on Load Autodesk Family.

In this menu, you can search for what you are looking for. See what appears when you type in Furniture:

To bring an Autodesk family into your project, select it and click on Load. It should be the first option that appears when placing a new component.
